Port workers on work stoppage

A work stoppage by prime mover drivers of the South Asia Gateway Terminals (Pvt) Ltd., (SAGT) in Sri Lanka's Colombo Port has crippled the container traffic in the port.

The SAGT is the largest container terminal within the Colombo Port and is privately managed.

Progressive Front Union member Palitha Atukorale had told the local media that the workers had resorted to trade union action since the contractors have not complied with the stipulated wages for the drivers.

However, the International Transport Workers Federation (ITWF) has reportedly contacted the contractors to resolve the issue.

Authorities meanwhile are considering sending in security forces personnel to help out at the terminal.
