The police have questioned Dirusha Ruwanga Dassanayake, General Manager of the SPM regarding the recent detection of a container load of sub standard drugs at the Colombo port.
Investigators say the drugs had been produced by an Indian company, which sent a consignment of injections phials with pieces of glass particles in them. Sources say an influential party made an abortive bid to remove the detained container load of Cefuroxim sodium phials worth approximately Rs. 20 million.Responding to a query by The Island, sources said that the sub standard drugs had been imported by a private company with the approval of the SPC. Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has directed health officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the container of drugs kept at the port. The Colombo Crime Division is conducting investigations under the direction of SP R. L. Ranaweera. Chief Inspector Hemantha Dikowita and IP Samudra Wijesinghe are conducting inquiries.
