The proposed amendments are highly against Tamil interests and TNA members have decided to vote against the move,” said Suresh Premachandran, MP of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). “So the TNA parliamentarians met today and we decided to oppose the 18th Amendments to the Constitution because it is highly against Tamil interests on the one hand. There are various reasons we can point out. “But at the moment, I can tell you one thing. On the one hand they are talking about the 13th Amendment and they said they were going to go beyond that. However the police commission, public service commission and all these commissions are taken away. So how can a minority party fighting for more devolution can be a party to it because basically they are taking all the power away from the Provincial Council,” said Premachandran. Meanwhile, Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva, Leader of the House says that the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill will be presented before Parliament today. He noted that this will be done by Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne. The minister also said that the government possessed the two-thirds majority required to endorse the Constitution. |
