It is said that Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) and the government are taking legal measures to seize a building and property worth Rs 30 million owned by a leading drug baron who is suspected of supplying drugs to all parts of the country, as well as to certain parts of Africa and the Middle East, our news sources said.
Wasantha Mendis, who was a resident of Katubedda, has now been identified by the Police Narcotic Bureau as a leading drug smuggler whose operations were centred in the Southern Province.
It is revealed that his drug business was being carried out behind the cover of operating a car sales business. Police investigations have also revealed that although the car sales business had been in operation for 10 years, only 150 vehicles had been sold during this period.
He also owns a 12 storey building in the Galle Town which was valued at Rs 13 million. Drug consignments of amounting to 500 kg at a time had been transported by boats from India and Pakistan, to the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka.
